A Classical Landscape with Peasants fording a Stream

Francesco Zuccarelli, RA (Pitigliano 1702 - Florence 1788). Oil painting on canvas, A Classical Landscape with Peasants fording a Stream by Francesco Zuccarelli RA (1702-1788). Women and children in foreground with animals, one on horseback with a child, man seated on the riverbank, town in background. A peasent woman and child on a grey pony, accompanied by a dog are fording a stream, another, herding animals, is carrying a child; an angler is seated at the left. Attached to a curved stretcher, inserted into a 18th century frame of the same shape which is designed to hang on a concave a wall. It was proabaly acquired from the artist before the drawing room was altered by Wyatt in 1794, presumably during his stay in England either between 1752-62 and 1765-71. A modern copy was made for it as a companion. Shugborough Estate, Staffordshire
