Image description

‘End of the German Sixth Army. Field Marshal Paulus during his interrogation at Red Army HQ Bippa’, 1943. Photograph, World War Two, Eastern Front (1941-1945), 1943. The Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943) was the turning point in the history of the Second World War. The Axis powers suffered around 850,000 casualties and never recovered from the defeat inflicted upon them by the Red Army. After months of bitter and attritional fighting, Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus’ Sixth Army surrendered to the Soviets on 2 February 1943. One of 26 British and Soviet official photographs.
