Image description

The Lusitania’s Call’, 1915 circa. Chromolithograph recruiting poster for the 7th (City of London) Battalion, The London Regiment, unknown artist, published by Nissen and Arnold Limited, London, 1915. The ‘Lusitania’ was torpedoed and sunk off the Irish coast by a German U-boat on 7 May 1915. Over 1000 passengers died and her sinking turned public opinion in many neutral countries against Germany. Her loss became an iconic symbol in military recruiting campaigns and also contributed to the United States’ entry into the war in 1917. Text transcription: 'THE LUSITANIA"S CALL/ IS THE SAME AS THE/ CALL FROM THE TRENCHES/ SOS [SEND OUT SOLDIERS/ TO/ THE/ SHINY OLD SEVENTH]/ ENLIST NOW/ IN THE FAMOUS/ 7TH (CITY OF/ LONDON) BATTN.
