Pyotr Podkovin, 72, sits in the study of the clinic north of Moscow where he lives after a lifetime suffering from leprosy. Podkovin is one of the about 1,000 people suffering from leprosy in Russia. He has had the disease since he was about 10 and had been at the clinic since he was 17. Captured by the Nazi invaders in 1944, he escaped from hospital before his captors could take him back to Germany. He hid in cellars for several months before it was safe to emerge.
