Image description

One illustration shows the Goldau landslide of 2 September 1806. On 2 September 1806, one of Switzerland's greatest catastrophes occurred. On the southern flank of the Rossberg in Canton Schwyz, after prolonged rainfall, enormous masses of rock loosened and thundered down into the valley. The slide destroyed an area of about 6 square kilometres and buried the two villages Goldau and Roethen. 457 people lost their lives, more than 100 houses, 220 stables and barns as well as 4 churches and chapels were destroyed.
