This view shows a loading platform (staith) beside a lead mine at Allendale in County Durham. A miner is free-wheeling down the ramp on the right on an empty wagon after its contents have been emptied into the chute of the ore-crushing machinery. This was used to separate the lead from the surrounding stone (ore). The picture shows the heavy red weights which were needed to balance the heavy crushing weights. Local artist John Storey painted this view for the Newcastle factory owner and art collector Thomas Sopwith.
