Image description

Schwarzwalder Uhrmacher. Translation: Black Forest Watchmaker. Clock making is an old Black Forest cottage industry, the beginnings of which date back to the 17th century. The abundance of wood encouraged the peasants to carve wooden clock cases, among other things. This is how the first watch workshops came into being in Schonwald, Triberg and Neustadt, and clock painters adorned the fronts with brightly colored paintings. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
