the drip tray carries an inscription that proclaims "glory to our master the sultan" and it was therefore not originally paired with the chandelier above. the horizontal projections between the vertical panels would have held glasses filled with oil; the lower drip tray when the fuel was being replenished would have prevented spillage on the carpets on the ground below. The vertical grilles alternate tiers of twelve pointed stars and superposed semi circular arches;the latter pattern became popular on a larger scale in the grilles of Ottoman water dispensaries in Cairo-copper alloy-inv.n.509 and 243-from the complex of Sultan Hasan-Mamluk 730/1330-IMG_4377
