Admiral of the Royal Navy, in the 18th century, the fleet was divided into three squadrons (front (van), center, and rear), the Rear Admiral commanded the rear squadron and was under the command of the Vice Admiral, who commanded the van, the admiral commanded the central squadron and oversaw command of the entire fleet. The admiral's ship was recognizable by a flag and was called the flagship. Colored etching, 1799, by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827).
