Image title
Newcastle upon Tyne and the River Tyne from Gateshead (watercolour)
Richardson, Thomas Miles, Snr
drawing, watercolour, entitled Newcastle upon Tyne and the River Tyne from Gateshead or The River Tyne from Windmill Hills or View on the Tyne at Gateshead, by the artist Richardson, Thomas Miles (Snr.)
A young woman on Windmills Hill at Gateshead is pictured looking down on King's Meadows Island in the centre of the River Tyne. The island was formed from silt deposited by the currents. The small hamlet of Elswick can be seen on the far bank. By 1890, the island had been dredged away, and the Elswick area was heavily built up with industry. The picture's subdued brown and green hues, and the extensive panoramic view are part of the Sublime landscape style popular in the early 19th century.
