Image description

Young Maasai pass in front of a pile of discarded wooden spears under the guidance of their elders the day before their graduation to elderhood ceremony in Kisaju, 80 km east of Kenya's capital Nairobi, December 19, 2003. When Maasai boys reach the age of 15, according to tradition they change to use metal spears as part of their initation into elderhood. They make head-dresses of ostrich plumes and eagle feathers, shave their heads, are circumcised and become Morani or young warriors. With others of the same age, they colour their skin red and braid their ocher coloured hair intricately and set off together to learn survival techniques.
