Dr. Michelle Brown, Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library in London, with a copy of the legendary Lindisfarne Gospels, believed to be the work of Eadfrith, bishop of Lindisfarne, between around 715-720. The Lindisfarne Gospels were saved from the first known Viking raid on England more than 1,200 years ago and survived the upheavals of the Dark Ages and the Reformation, and are now kept in the British Library. The library has just completed a three-year project creating new facsimiles of the Gospels which it is presenting to the Community Heritage Centre on Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, and nearby Durham Cathedral in separate ceremonies on May 16-17, 2003.
