Taiwan Foreign Minister John Chang addresses reporters as Taiwan prepared to put the 1842 Treaty of Nanking on display at Taipei's National Palace Museum June 27. The document, by which Britain forced China's Qing dynasty emperor Daoguang to cede Hong Kong to Queen Victoria, is one of four Hong Kong-related "unequal treaties" on display at the museum in advance of the territory's July 1 handover to Beijing. The treaties were carried to Taiwan when the Nationalist Republic of China was defeated in China's civil war in 1949 and fled to the island.
