The tanker lies on the ocean bed 3.5 km (two miles) below the surface, about 130 nautical miles (240 km) off the coast of Galicia in northwestern Spain. Portugal and France went on high alert on Wednesday as oil slicks from the sunken tanker encroached on their coasts and a tide of sludge lapped up on the shores of a second Spanish nature reserve. The spill has already coated 183 beaches in Spain with toxic heavy fuel oil despite the best efforts of under-equipped and overwhelmed volunteers who are helping the official clean-up.
