Afghan refugees wash carpets at a factory in Peshawar September 26, 2001. While some of the carpets are still made in Afghanistan, most are now woven in the camps housing many of the one million refugees in the North West Frontier Province, and are trimmed and finished in Peshawar by workers, who make about 60 rupees (90 cents) a day. In the two decades since Afghans first started to flee to Pakistan after the Soviet invasion, carpets have become an integral part of the provincial economy, with exports jumping from just $19 million five years ago to $128 million last year.
