1874//Oil on canvas In 1874, Repin spent the summer in Veules-les-Roses, Normandy, on the advice of the marine painter Alexei Bogolyubov. The latter, who was then living in Paris, had himself discovered this region in 1857 thanks to the painter Eugène Isabey. He insisted that young Russian fellows also experiment with outdoor painting. This Norman trip was an important experience for Répine. Several inhabitants posed for him, like this little fisherman's daughter. The poverty of her clothing, her melancholy face and her tangled hair are treated with great subtlety and without miserabilism.
