The reasons for these food shortages was the war at sea. Britain's navy had been blockading German ports since the beginning of the war, while the German U-boats had been sinking thousands of British and American merchant ships bringing supplies of food to Britain. The situation in Britain reached its worst point in April 1917 when only six weeks of supplies were left in Britain. Poster commissioned by Food Controller/Ministry of Food.
