A view of the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. The Sunken Garden was created during the reign of King Edward VII and opened in 1909. Designed in the 17th-century Dutch style, it was intended to recall the formal type of garden that had existed at Kensington before it was landscaped in the 18th century. The garden was laid out by the historian Ernest Law (1854-1930). The three lead fountains were formerly cisterns in the palace
