Shops are open on a busy street where people also use to cook in Nairobi's Kibera district stretched over six hundred acres of mud and filth, November 2003. According to a UN report the Kibera district was classed as the largest slum in the world where over 600,000 people are living illegally as squatters in squalid, unhealthy tin-roofed mud huts, mostly without water, sanitation, public services and frequent outbreaks of violence. This year's report entitled "The Challenge of Slums", is packed with statistics and figures on our rapidly urbanizing world, in which the total number of people currently living in slums is estimated at 928 million.
