Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro (L) and Romanian President Emil Constantinescu (R) are welcomed with flowers by a child February 18 as they visit a centre for testing children infected with the AIDS virus at Singureni village, south of Bucharest. The AIDS centre, build with money from an Italian charity, highlights the drama of Romanian children, the country having more than half of juvenile AIDS cases in Europe. Of some 3,000 cases of AIDS registered in Romania, children make-up more than 90 percent -- most of them were infected through unscreened blood transfusions and lack of disposable syringes in the communist era.
