Image description

-PHOTO TAKEN 20OCT02- Archaeologists in Peru say they have discovered that ancient lines etched into the desert in Palpa, south of Lima -- like this figure dubbed "The Voyager" or "The Mexican" -- were part of a water cult. The Palpa lines are less well known than the nearby Nazca lines but the archaeologists say some of them are even older, dating from 200 B.C. The lines, which have survived for centuries largely intact were also used for rituals and were remodeled, according to findings of the excavations. PICTURE TAKEN OCTOBER 20, 2002.
