Jean-Baptiste Colbert (Minister and Superintendent of the Kingdom, 1619-1683) and the engineer Pierre Paul de Riquet (1604-1680) presented to King Louis XIV (Louis 14) the project for the Canal des Deux Mers (Canal Royal or Canal du Midi), the junction of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The plan shows the route of the canal from Toulouse to Agde, passing through Narbonne and the Canal de la Robine. Drawing of Boucher engraved by J.P. Le Bas, engraving from 1764. The scene represented took place in 1665 or 1666.
