View of Longwood, Island of St Helena', 1822-1825. Engraved plate 59 from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia. Napoleon I (1769-1821) lived at Longwood during his exile from France between 1815 and his death. At the time of Duperrey's voyage, Saint Helena was administered by the East India Company, and became a British crown colony in 1834. It later became the British dependent state of Saint Helena. ©SSPL/Science Museum
