TURKS COMMEMORATE THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY IN THE QUAKE HIT NORTHWEST, 2000-08-17 (photo)

Marchers, mostly quake survivors, wear black T-shirts and carry black banners as they march through the streets of Golcuk, August 17, 2000, one of the hardest hit Turkish towns in the northwest of country, marking the first anniversary of a deadly earthquake. Banner reads in Turkish as " We did not forget. We won't Forget. We will not let them Forget!". Quake victims were demanding more attention to their ongoing problems including economic, housing, and unemployment problems. Turks commemorated their loss on the first anniversary of the powerful earthquake, which killed more than 17,000 and left 600,000 homeless. FS
