Tue 03, 1953 - French allege that Baron was a smuggler. Couple found dead in London's Ritz Hotel: Baron Pierre De Laitre, who killed Eileen hill at the Ritz Hotel, Piccadilly and then hanged himself, was being pressed for payment of 4,000 to the French Customs shortly before he died. And Customs officials wanted the money because they alleged de Laitre was a smuggler operating between the Channel Isles and Francs. At the French resort of Dinard, where he first met Miss Hill, daughter of a Portsmouth Policeman, the Baron ran an hotel and bar. The Police say that this was only a cover for the frequent voyages he made at night in his motor vessel off St. Helier, returning just before dawn.
