Train driver, 1940 A photograph of the driver of a steam locomotive leaning out of his cab, taken by Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper on 30 January, 1940. Driver Mr Bailey stands in the cab of a London Midland Scottish express train. During World War Two, railway work was classed as a 'Reserved Occupation' - vital to the national economy and reserving workers for railway, rather than frontline, duty. This photograph is one of a series taken to illustrate a Dudley Barker feature story on workers in wartime.
