Creator: Hennell, Thomas Barclay (1903-45) A hillside looking above buildings in front of the Belvedere Tower and the Nijmegen Bridge at the Maas-Waal canal, Netherlands, 1944. Beside the buildings are soldiers, a tank and military vehicles of the British Army. Thomas Barclay Hennell was a painter of rural scenes and a writer. A full-time salaried British official war artist, he was sent to replace Eric Ravilious in Iceland, and documented the D-Day preparations which he took part in. He witnessed the surrender of the Japanese from Burma and Singapore but tragically died when captured by Indonesian nationalists in November 1945.
