Image description

Jean Rameau, poet, songwriter from Berrichon and bagpiper, was born on March 11, 1852 in La Celle-Bruyère in the Cher department of France. It was the year when President Louis Napoleon issued a decree prescribing the formation of a collection of French songs, “a grand and complete monument to the anonymous and poetic genius of the people.” Nowadays, Jean Rameau is mainly known for his postcards. At the turn of the two centuries Rameau began publishing a series of postcards (there were going to be nearly five hundred!) , showing idealized scenes of rural Berry with costumed characters. The collection is called “Les Chansons de Jean Rameau illustrated”. On each postcard, you can read a verse rhyming with Berrichon and a photographed scene where Rameau often appears in peasant costume (he can be recognized by his white beard and his bagpipes). Among the topics: The nurse, La Bourrée de Saint Jean, Everything sings, The Bad Year, The Harvesters, La Froumagée, The Spinners, Les Accordailles, La Noce de Nout' Gas, etc...
