In 1490, Charles VIII transformed the medieval fortress of Château du Cloux in Amboise into a pleasure house. The pink brick house, which took the name Château du Clos Lucé, then became the pleasure residence of the kings of France. In 1516, François I placed the Clos Lucé at the disposal of Leonardo da Vinci, who would live there for three years, until his death on 2 May 1516. In the foreground, the aerial screw, built after a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci dated 1487-1490, which is found in the Manuscripts of the Institut de France.
