Portrait of Alvaro de Bazán, 2nd Marqués de Santa Cruz (d. 1646), Spanish General, who served in the Low Countries in 1631-2, in grisaille, half-length, slightly turned to the left facing the spectator, in armour with a white collar, holding a baton in his right hand, his helmet resting on a ledge in front. Engraved by P. Pontius (Wibiral, 43). From a set of grisaille portraits by Van Dyck of artists and distinguished persons, for engravers to work from. The panels, with the exception of M.188, are all in identical English 18th Century carved and gilded Palladian frames, with tongue-and-leaf outer edge and foliate sight edge.
