Image description

Inscription, in plate, lower margin: Sarah Malcolm Executed in Fleet street, March ye 7th 1732 for Robbing / the Chambers of Mrs Lydia Duncomb in ye Temple, and Murdering Her, Eliz: Harrison & Ann Price. / W. Hogarth (ad Vivum) pinxit & sculpsit. Sarah Malcolm was a notorious murderess, who killed three women because they woke up while she was robbing their house. The 22 year old became a figure of popular appeal; after her hanging a large crowd gathered at the undertakers to see her body. A gentleman is said to have paid half a crown to kiss her face. Hogarth visited and drew Malcolm in Newgate Prison; his original painting is in the National Gallery of Scotland. The print sold large numbers of copies.
