Distribution of Boer War campaign medals to Lord Strathcona's Horse, London, 1901. Photograph, 1901. King Edward VII presenting campaign medals to soldiers from Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) at Buckingham Palace. The unit was founded in 1900 at the personal expense of Donald Smith, Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, for service in the Boer War (1899-1902). Sergeant Arthur Herbert Lindsay Richardson was the first member of Strathcona’s Horse to win the Victoria Cross for his actions at Wolve Spruit on 5 July 1900. Strathcona’s Horse went on to serve on the Western Front with the Canadian Cavalry Brigade during World War One (1914-1918). One of 254 photographs collected by the Roberts Family 1890-1922.
