Pattern 1853 .577 in percussion rifle musket, 1858. This weapon, also known as the Enfield rifle, was used by the volunteers. Its barrel is badly worn and it was refurbished in 1861. It has a ‘Tower’ lock, meaning that it may well have been an experimental model. However, since the barrel is of normal calibre, rather than the experimental calibre, it was presumably re-barrelled in 1861 to be the standard bore. There would have been no point in issuing a non-standard musket to the volunteers.
