Victoria Cross group awarded to A/Captain (later Brigadier) A M Toye, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own).
Acting Captain Toye of the 2nd Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own), was awarded the VC for his actions on 25 March 1918 at Eterpigny Ridge in France. Captain Toye displayed conspicuous bravery and fine leadership when he three times re-established a post which had been captured by the enemy with one officer and six men. He counter-attacked with 70 men and took up a line which he maintained until reinforcements arrived. In two subsequent operations he covered the retirement of his battalion and later re-established a line that had been abandoned before his arrival, he was twice wounded but remained on duty.
During his long service Brigadier Toye was also awarded the Military Cross (1917), 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-20, Allied Victory Medal 1914-19 with Oak Palm, Defence Medal 1939-45, British War Medal 1939-45, General Service Medal 1918-62 with clasp Palestine 1945-48, Coronation Medal 1937, Coronation Medal 1953 and the Order of the Nile, Egypt.
