Image description

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "More of No.4 S. Barnabas' Sq. After being taken over by the Corporation, and the windows boarded The leaden water-catchment can be clearly seen on Right. I omitted to mention that the museum now has this. Before the M. people took it over, some of the corporation workmen divested the piece of many layers of whitewash, and when I was invited to go down & inspect it in Griffin's yard, I was surprised. It showed the original bare lead surface, and the incised letters & figures as sharply cut as though the job had just been executed, and not 150 odd years ago. There are only two remaining houses in the town proper so dated: the Saddle Inn, Queen Street, 1819, and a house half way along Athol St., on the North side (Athol St. dating dubious) A third, No.1 Duke Lane, had a large catchment, but no sign of a date as seen from Market HIll. Taken down early in 1935."
