This dramatic sketch shows Sunderland South Pier, with the North Pier to the left. Water is flooding over the wall from the rough sea on the right, outside the harbour. The masts of ships in difficulties can just be seen on the right beside the harbour entrance. The swirling mass of colour in the sky is similar to storms painted by JMW Turner, whose pictures were much admired at this time. TM Richardson showed this study at the Northern Academy in Newcastle in 1828;
