The life-size white marble statue of Shakespeare (1564-1616) designed by William Kent and executed by Peter Scheemakers was erected in 1740. Includes carved heads of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry V and Richard III on the base of the pedestal below Prospero's lines from The Tempest The Latin inscription above the head of the statue, in gold on a panel of dark marble, can be translated :"William Shakespeare [erected] 124 years after [his] death by public esteem".
