Historical Geography. 1900. Ireland. Mountain peat, composed mainly of sphagnum and andromeda mosses, makes better fuel than the lowland peat, which is principally hypnum moss. The top layers are used for moss litter, paper pulp, and textile fabrics, and only the compact dark peat obtained two feet and more below the surface is much good for fuel. The calorific value of pure peat is rather more than half that of a similar weight of black coal, and it is, of course, much easier to raise from the soil.
