McLea, Duncan Fraser
drawing, ink (wash) on paper, entitled The Low Light (North Shields), by the artist Duncan Fraser McLea
The picture shows the Low Light at North Shields, before the erection of the fish quay, taken from a sketch made in 1868. The Low Light, together with the High Light, enabled safe navigation for ships entering the river, before the piers were built. This pen and ink drawing is very precise, carefully capturing every tiny detail. Duncan Fraser McLea specialised in portraits, and marine and landscape subjects. He was well known for scenes of the local coast and shipping.
