He has studied the rocks in the foreground very carefully, capturing the subtle colours and textures by applying several thin layers or washes of paint. They contrast strongly with the darker headland behind them, which fades into the distance. James Miller Brown was a landscape and coastal painter in oil and watercolour. He worked at South Shields, and briefly at Newcastle, during the late 19th / early 20th centuries.
