Misty colours and soft-edged forms create a contemplative mood in this scene. The title, 'The Time was Young', seems to suggest a simple way of life surviving from long ago. William Lee-Hankey moved to France for several years from the early 1900s. He was in search of unspoilt scenes of village life, and worked particularly in Normandy and Brittany. The young girl in this picture shows Lee-Hankey's skill in painting figures in watercolour. Throughout the picture, he has used washes of watercolour on damp paper, allowing the colours to merge.
