Image description

Enoch Seeman the younger (Gda?sk c.1694 – London 1744). Oil painting on canvas, George Venables-Vernon, 1st Baron Vernon of Kinderton (1709-1780) by Enoch Seeman the younger (Gda?sk c.1694 – London 1744), signed and dated, lower right: "Enoch Seeman pin./ 1740" and inscribed, bottom right: "George first Lord Vernon." A full-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, standing, his left hand holding a red fur-lined cap, his right hand on his hip, wearing a red knee-length coat with gold frogging, red tights and calf-length boots, he has a sword on his left hip, over his coat he wears a large dark-blue fur-lined cloak fastened beneath his chin, his left arm is leaning against a pillar on the right. Sky and distant horizon on the left. The outfit is a version of the Hungarian Hussar uniform which became popular in England in the mid-eighteenth century and was later adopted by the British Army for its Hussar regiments.
