The hidden face of the Moon and the Earth seen from DSCOVR. 07/2015 - Far side of the Moon with Earth seen from DSCOVR. 07/2015 - This image obtained on July 16, 2015 by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite shows the passage of the Moon and its face hidden from the Earth. The distance between DSCOVR and Earth is about 1.5 million kilometres. The Moon was approximately 400,000 kilometres from Earth, so it was closer to DSCOVR and therefore appears larger than it is in relation to Earth. This image shows the far side of the moon, illuminated by the sun, as it crosses between the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) camera and telescope, and the Earth - one million miles away.
