These are examples of goggles and spectacles used by mountaineers and polar explorers to protect their eyes from the harsh glare of the sun reflecting off snow and ice. Prolonged exposure to such glare without protection can cause snow-blindness. The black-tinted goggles in a leather mask (top) date from 1891-1930.
