Skeleton of Napoleon’s horse 'Marengo'

Marengo was an Arab horse with a light grey coat, standing just over fourteen hands high. The horse was purchased by Napoleon after the Battle of Aboukir in 1799 and was named after his victory at the Battle of Marengo, 1800. The horse was, reputedly, ridden by Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, 1815. After the Emperor’s defeat Marengo passed into the hands of Lord Petre who then sold him to Lieutenant-General J J W Angerstein, Grenadier Guards. Angerstein placed the horse in stud and advertised its service up to 1820. The horse died in 1831 and the skeleton was preserved and later passed to the Royal United Service Institute.
