Video description

Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC introduces King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to the airmen of No. 617 Squadron Bomber Command, better known as the "Dambusters". The Royals congratulate the squadron task force at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, including decorated Flight Lieutenants Harold Martin and Joseph C McCarthy. Commander Gibson's Avro Lancaster plane stands behind the squadron. This Royal Air Force (RAF) crew took part in the bombing raid on German dams in the Ruhr valley in the early hours of 17 May 1943, codenamed Operation Chastise. The raid used special "bouncing bombs" developed by English inventor and engineer Barnes Wallis.
