PROTESTERS CARRY PICTURE OF LATE PRESIDENT ALLENDE, 1973-09-11 (photo)

Former chief of army and retired General Augusto Pinochet toppled Socialist President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973, being today the 25th anniversary of the coup d'etat. Although police have received strict orders from the government to break any protests, hundreds of people gathered blocks away from the presidential palace to remember the death of Allende who allegedly committed suicide the same day of the coup and the more than 3,000 people who disappeared or were tortured during Pinochet's dictatorship until 1990.
