Britain's Law Lords decided by a 6-1 mayority on March 24 that the former dictator, who led the country from 1972 until 1990, was not immune from prosecution for human rights abuses, but can only be tried for crimes committed after 1988. Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, who ordered Pinochet's arrest, issued a court document on March 26 saying that he had evidence of 33 new cases of torture and murder during Pinochet's rule after 1988 to add to previously existing cases.
