PHNOM PENH'S ANTI-MOSQUITO BRIGADE DRIVES IN PHNOM PENH, 2001-06-13 (photo)

Young Cambodia children eye a larger-than-life mock up of a mosquito mounted on a Ministry of Health truck as it drives around Phnom Penh on June 13, 2001, informing residents of the dangers of dengue fever. Through a loudspeaker, a team from the ministry's National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control warns of the disease, which already has infected nearly 800 people this year throughout the country, and gives advice on how to avoid contracting it. Dengue, transmitted by tiger mosquitoes which breed in clean still water, is difficult to treat and many provincial medical centres around Cambodia do not have sufficient training to properly diagnose the illness. Some 10 percent of diagnosed cases in Cambodia end in death. HJ/PB
