A scandal erupted last week when a video surfaced showing Vladimiro Montesinos, who has been the power behind President Alberto Fujimori for the last ten years, allegedly bribing an opposition congressman to switch sides. The ensuing scandal prompted Fujimori, who was elected in a tainted ballot in May, to call out for new elections and to assure that he did not plan to run again.
